John Grant of Winthorpe

Baptised at Brinkhill 15 August 1770, son of William Grant. Seems to have farmed at Winthorpe all his life; recorded there in 1841 and 1851 (“Farmer of 14 acres”), before moving to Louth by 1861 (“Formerly a farmer”) to live with his daughters Elizabeth and Mary. Died at Louth 1 May 1862, aged 92, and buried at Winthorpe on 4 May. His will (written in 1845) was proved on 29 July 1872 at under £200 by his cousin William Grant.

Married at Strubby, 31 March 1795, to Mary Mawer. She was baptised at Strubby 3 August 1769, and died at Winthorpe in 1858, aged 89 (90 in the register).

Issue 4 daughters and 3 sons:

  1. Ann Grant, baptised at Strubby 20 September 1795. Apparently at Newark in 1835, when a daughter was born, and living in Derby in 1851, 1861, and 1871 working as a laundress. She had at least retired by 1881, and died at 108 Burton Road, Derby, on 28 January 1885.
    Married firstly on 12 December 1821 at Spilsby St James, to John Horn (“of the Parish of Hundleby”). He was baptised at Hundleby 1 December 1795, died 8 August 1823, and is buried at Hundleby.

    Married secondly at Louth St James on 17 July 1831 to William Rogers (‘widower’). He died before 1861.

  3. Thomas Grant, baptised at Strubby 10 July 1800, and died at Ingoldmells 14 December 1881. Buried at Winthorpe. Appears to have lived all his life at Winthorpe; “Ag. Lab.” in 1851, 1861 and 1871, and “Cottager” in 1881.
    Married at Winthorpe 8 Jan 1831 to Mary Ann Moody.
  4. Elizabeth Grant, baptised at Strubby 13 December 1803 and seems to have died at Louth in 1868.
    Married at Louth St. James on 10 June 1838 to to William Clarke, keeper of the ‘Lock Tavern’ in Louth in 1861. By 1871 he was a ‘Gentleman’, and his sister-in-law Mary was acting as his housekeeper. He was born at Louth ca. 1807, and died there 13 October 1876 leaving an estate of under £100.
  5. Sarah Maria Grant, baptised at Beesby in the Marsh 12 April 1807, and died at Louth in 1864. Buried there 1 August 1864. Seems to have lived all her life at Louth as a pauper.
    Married on 5 July 1840 at St. James, Louth, to John Cutts.
  6. Mary Grant, baptised at Croft 1 June 1810, and died unmarried at Louth 4 October 1882, leaving an estate of £778 4s and 8d. Seems to have lived with her sister Elizabeth and her husband, and inherited their house at 33 Ramsgate, Louth, where she was living in 1881.
